So every time we observe curvature in spacetime we believe it's caused by matter, since we know matter distorts spacetime.
That's like saying bears make noise and I heard a noise so it must be a bear. A more logical cause for curvature in
spacetime is the natural variation in spacetime density as a result of the big bang, as in the variability in the cosmic
microwave background. Puffs of spacetime originating at the big bang went on to form nebulae and smoke rings went on
to form galaxies as they represent more dense (or curved) spacetime, and matter is attracted and retained by this curvature
which then holds together the galaxies and nebulae. Or so it would seem.
